There are two types of illuminated signs -
Externally Illuminated Signs
An externally illuminated Area of Refuge sign requires a source of illumination outside of the sign itself. The source of light can be LED, incandescent, or compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Internally Illuminated Signs
Internally illuminated Area of Refuge Signs require no external light to shine on the sign to be visible. They rely on the building’s power source during regular operation, and the battery will power the light bulbs if the power fails.
On the other hand,Photoluminescent Area of Refuge Signs absorb the ambient light from the building’s normal lighting system and illuminate on their own in the event of a power failure. Photoluminescent signs are also known as glow-in-the-dark signs.
We use Grade II Braille. Grade 2 is not a “letter for letter” translation of the text; it contains 265 contractions, single characters used to represent whole words or groups of letters. Braille dot cells are 0.10 inches apart, measured from the center. Braille used on our signs complies with California Braille specifications which are also valid nationwide.
