• Battery exit signs must be hooked up to a standard eletrical power source to power the sign. In case of power failure, the sign will stay lit for at least 90min.
• Sealed Lead Acid Batteries are charged with a solid-state charger while connected to main power. Batteries are 6-Volt and premium-grade for maximum reliability and life.
• Some models offer a premium Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) battery option as well. Self-testing/self-diagnostic battery options are also available.

Q. How do Battery Exit Signs work?

Battery Exit Signs have batteries inside the housing, but they are still powered with electricity. Sustaining on batteries alone is a nearly impossible task. Therefore, when the main power is on, Battery Exit Signs are powered from the electrical grid of the building. The backup battery in the sign gets charged just like a cell phone gets charged, to its full potential so it can supply power to the sign during emergencies like a power outage.

Q. Are Lithium-Ion battery Exit signs better than Lead Acid Battery Exit Signs?

Lithium-Ion Battery is similar to lead-acid batteries with the difference of separator in the former. While Lithium Ion Battery Exit Signs have various advantages like high energy density and handling many charge/discharge cycles, signs with such batteries are sensitive to high temperatures. If the battery is completely discharged, the Exit Sign can no longer be recharged. Also, it is relatively expensive. That said, charging a lead-acid battery can take more than 10 hours, whereas lithium-ion batteries just take anywhere between a few minutes to 3 hours to charge, depending on the size of the battery. Additionally, Lithium-Ion Battery Exit Signs have a longer life than sealed lead-acid batteries. Make sure you know all the advantages and disadvantages.

Q. Which Battery Exit Sign should I buy - green or red? Does it make a difference?

Choosing between red and green exit signs for your facility is dependent on several factors, including aesthetics and local regulations. For example, in New York & Chicago, Exit Signs must have red letters. Check with your local building codes, fire marshals, or inspectors before purchasing any exit sign. Some safety codes also require exit signs to have white text ("EXIT") on a colored background, while others require colored text on a white or clear background. Most international building codes prescribe green as the color for exit signs.

Q. Is it required to hardwire exit signs?

Yes. Battery Backup Exit Signs and Electrical LED Exit Signs must be hard-wired to your building's electricity for the battery to work in Emergency Mode. If the area has not already been wired for the sign, you must consult an electrician. Only self-luminous and photoluminescent exit signs do not need to be connected to the building power source or generator.

Q. Do you have rechargeable battery exit signs?

Yes, our Battery Exit Signs are rechargeable. The battery starts powering the Exit Sign as soon as the main power goes off. The internal solid-state transfer switch automatically connects the internal battery to the LED board for a minimum of 90-minute emergency illumination. And when the electricity comes back, the battery is recharged. A fully automatic solid-state, two-rate charger initiates battery charging to recharge a discharged battery in 24-hours.

It has been determined that the sign meets specifically defined requirements (UL 924, the Standard for Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment) for functionality, reliability, and visibility.
